In true British summer style, it was pouring with rain as we approached the Roman Baths in Bath for their summer evening preview event.
Undeterred, we walked around the upper terrace to admire the teal waters from above, before descending down to the main spa area as the clouds started to lift and some blue sky peeked through.
Each summer, the Roman Baths open during the evenings to show off the historic site at its prettiest time – sunset – and believe me, it’s the BEST time to visit. Everything’s quieter, everything’s a little more dramatic in the setting sunlight and the ambience is incredible.
This summer they kicked things off in style with wine and photography, celebrating their brand new #RomanSummer photography competition, which will be running all summer long. We grabbed a glass and wandered all around the space, exploring the different rooms and having some pretty hilarious chats with the characters about Roman culture.
Although I am perhaps a little too familiar with the other Bath spa, this was my first time seeing the actual real life baths, and it’s not hard to imagine how it would have actually been to visit them in Roman times. And although there was no bathing or massages, I still left feeling really relaxed – sometimes it’s nice to get all Roman and take a break from the busy humdrum of 21st century life.
